Compare viewpoints

Compare short sources, connect a theme and keep fact separate from inference
What it is about
Identify a theme or factual difference across short sources, separating inference from explicit fact.
Year 4 · 8–9 years · 30 challenges

What the class will do
- Sort into groups · 6 challenges
Attribute the explicit facts
Read both extracts. Classify only what is explicitly stated in A, B, both or neither. A reasonable inference can belong in neither explicitly stated and still be worth discussing.
- Choose and explain · 8 challenges
Topic, theme or difference?
Use evidence from both sources. A shared topic is not automatically a theme; a true small observation may be incomplete as a comparison.
- Match pairs · 8 challenges
Make a specific comparison
Each card contains two complete short extracts. Match the most specific comparison supported by both within this microset; do not add missing causes or identities.
- Choose and explain · 8 challenges
Compare with care
Keep attribution, uncertainty and both sources’ evidence. Choose a shared idea only when the actions or relationships in both extracts support it.
Using it in class
Everyone cites a clue from each original source before the representative acts. Neither explicitly stated can include a sensible inference; it does not mean false. Shared themes must fit both extracts. First five comparison boards: 8–12 minutes; all 30: 35–45 with selected discussion.
Give everyone time to think and discuss before one pupil acts at the board. The class explains and confirms together; hints and explanations stay until you move on.
Use an up-to-date browser on a computer connected to a whiteboard or shared display. Touch, mouse and keyboard; optional audio and reduced motion. No pupil accounts or personal devices.
Choose from 5 challenges up to the full activity. Discussion determines the duration: you set the pace.
Teacher Pro access includes all 30 challenges, interactive materials, hints and explanations for this activity.
