    Read familiar words

Recognize a declared set of high-frequency words and simple taught decodable words.

Using it in class

Taught words: I a the to is my we see; cat map sun hen pig dog bed cup hat top run sit pan pin cap tap. Teach these first with the district sequence (short vowels, hard c/g). Read directions and sentences aloud; let children read choices. Follow with actual shared reading.

Give everyone time to think and discuss before one pupil acts at the board. The class explains and confirms together; hints and explanations stay until you move on.

Use an up-to-date browser on a computer connected to a whiteboard or shared display. Touch, mouse and keyboard; optional audio and reduced motion. No pupil accounts or personal devices.

Choose from 5 challenges up to the full activity. Discussion determines the duration: you set the pace.

A look inside the activities

Read bed and then point to its last letter.

Choose and explain

Teacher: read “We see a hen.” Which set of printed words matches the whole sentence?

  • We see a hen.
  • We see a hat.
  • I see a hen.
Explanation and discussion
