Use parts in new words
Read new words and connect them to precise meanings or useful parts. Check the complete word after matching.
Using it in class
Everyone reads and predicts before a representative acts. Ask which letters carry the meaning. Optional oral reading lets the teacher observe accuracy; selections do not assess pronunciation. Use five challenges or one block at a time; 30–45 minutes is a full-bank estimate.
Give everyone time to think and discuss before one pupil acts at the board. The class explains and confirms together; hints and explanations stay until you move on.
Use an up-to-date browser on a computer connected to a whiteboard or shared display. Touch, mouse and keyboard; optional audio and reduced motion. No pupil accounts or personal devices.
Choose from 5 challenges up to the full activity. Discussion determines the duration: you set the pace.
A look inside the activities
Match pairs
Read the beginning of each word. Match the whole word to its meaning.
unkind
reread
preheat
Match with:
not kind
read again
heat before use
Explanation and discussion
Un- changes kind to not kind; re- means again in reread; pre- means before in preheat.
What stays the same when a prefix is added?
Build a sequence
A sport uses a hoop and a bouncing ball. Order the printed parts to name the sport.
bas
ket
ball
Explanation and discussion
Bas + ket + ball forms basketball, the sport in the clue. Starting with ball does not make that word.
Read the complete word, then point to its three printed parts.
Choose and explain
She unpacked a suitcase. Which analysis explains the action?
pack + ed with un- meaning again
pack + ed with un- meaning before
un + pack + ed: undid the packing
Explanation and discussion
Pack names the action; here un- reverses it and -ed places it in the past. She undid the packing. Again would need re-, and before would need pre-.
Read the parts, then explain how unpack differs from repack.
